The Four Sacred Dhams of Chardham Yatra
The Chardham Yatra covers four holy temples in Uttarakhand – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Each of these places is connected with our faith, old stories, and natural beauty. Visiting all four dham is believed to wash away sins and give peace and blessings.
Yamunotri Dham – The Temple of Goddess Yamuna

Yamunotri is the first stop of the Chardham Yatra tour. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the sister of Yama (the God of death). People believe that bathing in the Yamuna water protects us from untimely death and gives purity to the soul. The temple is located at a height of 3,293 meters and is surrounded by beautiful snow mountains and green valleys.
Main attractions at Yamunotri:
The journey starts from Hanuman Chatti and a 6 km trek from Janki Chatti takes you to the temple.
Pilgrims take a holy dip in Surya Kund, a natural hot water spring near the temple.
Devotees offer prayers at Divya Shila, a sacred stone before entering the temple.
Gangotri Dham – The Temple of Goddess Ganga

Gangotri is the second dham of the yatra. It is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the most sacred river of India. The temple is located at 3,100 meters on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. According to the legend, River Ganga came down to Earth when Lord Shiva released her from his hair locks, after King Bhagirath prayed for the salvation of his ancestors.
Main attractions at Gangotri:
The beautiful Gangotri Temple built in white granite.
The holy Ganga Aarti performed on the riverbank in the evening.
Bhagirath Shila, where King Bhagirath meditated.
The scenic Harsil Valley, famous for apple orchards and pine forests.
For adventurous devotees, Gaumukh Glacier, the actual source of River Ganga, is an important trek.
Kedarnath Dham – The Temple of Lord Shiva

Kedarnath is the third dham and one of the most popular temples of Lord Shiva. It is also one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Located at 3,583 meters, the temple stands in the middle of high Himalayan peaks, making it one of the most divine places in India. It is said that the Pandavas came here to ask forgiveness from Lord Shiva after the Mahabharata war.
Main attractions at Kedarnath:
The trek to Kedarnath Temple starts from Gaurikund. The trek is about 16 km and is full of natural beauty.
Inside the temple, the Shiva Lingam is worshipped as Lord Kedarnath.
Bhim Shila, a big rock behind the temple, protected Kedarnath Temple during the flood in 2013.
Helicopter services are also available from Phata, Guptkashi, and Dehradun for those who cannot trek.
Badrinath Dham – The Temple of Lord Vishnu

Badrinath is the last dham of the yatra and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is located at 3,133 meters, on the banks of the Alaknanda River, with the Neelkanth peak in the background. The idol of Lord Vishnu here is in a meditating position, and it is believed that Adi Shankaracharya established this dham in the 8th century.
